Case Name:
Romantic Nights

LOCATION:
Venice, Italy

Case Description:
During the high tides and always at night when visibility is low due to the mist, there is a mysterious gondolier gliding through canals. Several tourists and local establishment owners have seen it and their reports caused a small sensation on the internet turning the story into an urban legend a few years ago. The gondolier was reported to be dressed in traditional outfit but the man had no flesh, only bones. Every witness had repeated the claim that there was no sound coming from gondola or water it treaded. The popularity of this story slowly faded until last week when someone who wished to stay anonymous sent us a link to an Italian news portal where a story broke of an American tourist who was there with her newlywed husband. The couple had a small argument on their honey moon and the man then decided to just take a ride himself. He never returned to the hotel but the police got information from a witness from that night who talked about a familiar story of a skeletal gondolier. Only this time...there was a skeletal passenger on his gondola. The police dismissed the young woman's claims that maybe it was her husband and continues to work on their leads which they call “non-fiction''. We however, have discussed the case and came to a conclusion an investigation is definitely in order and contacted the woman and her family. Go find out what the mystery behind the gondolier is and what actually happened.

Scenes:
1) "Are you...Charon...?"
Upon reaching Venice, Nyx meets up with the young woman who claimed that the skeleton on the ghostly gondolier could be her husband, and proceeds to compile information regarding the case. She discovers that 1. from photographs of the woman and the husband, the skeletal passenger on the ghostly gondolier was wearing the same clothes as her husband was last seen wearing when they had their argument, 2. the woman's husband cannot swim. Quickly putting two and two together, Nyx waits for nightfall to confront the skeletal gondolier, to prove if her theories are correct.

"Are you...Charon...? The Ferryman of the River Styx?"

The hollow sockets looked directly at Nyx's purple orbs, and a slight tilt of his head indicated a silent "yes". Nyx did a mental fist pump and continued calmly.

"The river has changed. Times have changed. You no longer need to be bound to patrol this river. You are free."

She wasn't sure if she was being polite enough, but Charon seemed to understand what she was trying to say. He turned his hollow sockets towards the lone skeletal passenger on board, using his head to gesture lightly towards him.

2) "Consider him your last job. But first..."
"I will pay you for him. Consider him your last job."

If skeletons could smile, that would be exactly what Charon was doing. He extended a skeletal arm to Nyx for his payment.

"But first... I would like for him to have a chance to bid farewell to his wife."

Charon cocked his head curiously to the side.

"He was...taken away suddenly. Drowned, I presume...?"

A look of comprehension dawned on Charon's bony features. (Nyx wondered how she was able to read expressions from a hollow skull but shrugged it off quickly) A dull clacking sound resounded through the night as he gently nodded. Nyx then promptly flicked the gold dubloon over to Charon, who caught it expertly, and gave him directions to where the skeletal passenger's wife was waiting. As the gondolier moved across the dark waters, she noticed there were no ripples, and no sound coming from the water below. "He's really not of this world..." she thought quietly to herself, enjoying the night view anyway.

3) "Thank you."
The husband and wife have a tearful and short reunion, where they apologise for their petty fight and reaffirm their love for each other. He presents her a gift to keep beside her and remind her of him always, before fading into the afterlife. Charon ferries him away and the two disappear into the darkness, never to be seen again.

To Nyx's dismay, the grateful wife embraces her affectionately, muttering incoherently about how thankful she was to have obtained closure, and how she would cherish these memories of her late husband.

Nyx just wanted to get away and get home and play games. Physical contact was still a little too much for the poor girl to handle.

Conclusion:
Nyx reasoned that after the newly wed couple had their argument, the man stormed off to walk the rivers of Venice on his own, but in his anger and confusion, he fell into one of the many canals in the city. Being unable to swim, he quickly drowned to death, and was picked up by Charon, the ferryman who carries newly deceased souls into the afterlife. However, Charon required payment in order to properly ferry his new passenger to the afterlife, and without payment, the two simply roamed the rivers night after night, waiting for someone to come settle the debt and send him off to the afterlife.

Charon had no malicious intent, and was roaming the canals night after night looking for new souls to ferry. As the canals of Venice were the location of the River Styx that he was assigned to ferry souls from, he continued to patrol the canals faithfully night after night, even though the people of Venice were no longer in need of his service. This is why Nyx declared this his last job, and sent him on his way after his last payment, freeing him from his duties and servitude.

Trivia:
Nyx knew about the Greek mythology of Charon the ferryman and instinctively linked the two cases together because she remembered an MMO that she had played where she had used a hero called Charon, a skeletal ferryman bound to ferry souls along the River Styx. Looks like her knowledge of games came in useful this time.

OKAY I'M DONE WITH THIS and gah I'm a little sad and disappointed I didn't have the time to finish full colouring all the scenes or do a better job with this. But I really wanted to finish this before the deadline, and since I'm going overseas in a few hours' time I'D BETTER SUBMIT THIS NOW HEHE.

I'm super happy to have gotten this case because I thought it was a really well thought out case that can have many varying conclusions, so good job admins on being so creative and amazing! This conclusion was one of the most logical ones I thought out, especially for a first, Threat Level : 0 for a newbie Agent so I hope it's ok!

WHEEEEEE exciting stuff

Quite the tragic ending how the husband died after marrying his wife. But the fact that he had that reunion with his wife made it bittersweet :)

And Feng looks adorable when she's annoyed xD
